先说结论
第九十九回统计的是唐僧一生之难，数完以后却发现还差一难。
原著没有写八十一段等长冒险，也没有安排八十一只妖怪。难簿会把同一关目拆成多项考验，也会把完全没有妖怪的经历计入：唐僧幼年险情、收徒、疾病、被逼婚、监禁，乃至凌云渡脱去凡胎。
第九十九回诗中明确编号的只有八十难。观音阅毕，说“佛门中九九归真”，当场命人再生一难；白鼋在通天河把师徒与经卷掀入水中，才补足第八十一难。

第八十一难如何发生
最后一难并不等在去路上，而是在取经已经“完成”之后被主动补上。
难簿写到凌云脱胎
第八十难是“凌云渡脱胎”。按通常叙事逻辑，师徒已经见佛、得经、功成，故事本该进入凯旋。
圆满之数要求再生一难
观音没有把已有八十难重新拆分凑数，而是直接命护法“还生一难”，让九九之数进入情节本身。
忘记承诺，反而补足难数
唐僧承认忘了替老鼋向佛祖问前程，老鼋便把人、马、经卷一并掀入河中。经书受湿受损，一项未尽的承诺完成了形式上的圆满。
常见问题
《西游记》真的有八十一场妖怪战吗？
不是。第九十九回的难簿把唐僧前世遭贬、出生险情、收徒、求援、婚姻考验、疾病、监禁与妖难都计入，同一段故事也可能拆成数难。八十一是修行难数，不是八十一只妖怪。
为什么原著清单只写到第八十难？
观音检查难簿后发现“还少一难”，命八大金刚把师徒提前放回通天河。老鼋因唐僧忘记代问寿数而将众人和经卷掀入水中，这才补足第八十一难。
八十一难为什么是八十一？
原文直接说“佛门中九九归真”。九乘九为八十一，重点在圆满之数；故事甚至主动制造最后一难，让形式上的修行数目完成。
八十一难和八十一回一样吗？
不一样。小说共一百回，一回可以包含多项难数，一项难数也可能横跨数回。第九十九回的难簿是回顾性统计，不是目录的另一种编号。
原典证据
难簿、少一难的判断与通天河落水，都在第九十九回同场出现。
前八十项沿用公开中文原文。第八十一项采用说明性标题，因为原著在编号诗之后直接叙述事件，并没有再补写一句带编号的难名。

从难数到《灵妖西行》
《灵妖西行》继承“难数已满”的压力，不把每一难误写成一只怪。
游戏中的百层伏妖塔与取经三百年后的世界属于原创系统。本文把原著八十一难的统计口径单独标清，让改编可以回应“难数圆满”的母题，却不篡改原著到底在数什么。
