Journey Scroll No.150

Great Sage Equal to Heaven

齐天大圣

In the moment the crown settled, I finally understood: the Great Sage Equal of Heaven has returned — the title first. The one who bore it is still on the road.

In their own words

Page one hundred fifty of the Journey Scroll. The last page. Mine.

And yet everything I have to write, from the first line to the last, is about someone else.

The crown first. The Phoenix-Wing Crown of purple gold, found on the Vulture Peak road — not enshrined in any treasury: dropped at the roadside, half-buried, its dust three hundred years thick. When I lifted it, my hands shook past controlling. Not because it was precious.

Because it was so light.

The operas say the East Sea Dragon King presented this crown to him; that he wore it storming the celestial court, wore it up the steps of the Hall of Miraculous Mist. I had imagined such a crown must weigh a thousand jun. But it lay in my palms light as a feather — as if its master, in the moment he took it off, had carried all the weight away himself, and left only the lightness for whoever came after.

Then the trial. The Equal-of-Heaven trial, at the Heart-Listening Altar in Water Curtain Cave. Its protocol involves no weapons: before the crown may be worn, you sit upon the altar. And listen.

Listen to what? To what lives inside the crown.

No soul lives there — the soul went with the man. What lives in the crown is the breath he left inside the title: three hundred years in which no one dared speak the name, and that breath coiled in the crown, undispersed. I sat three days and three nights, and it rose out of the crown layer by layer, and washed over me:

The first layer is pride. The thing that burst from a stone and would not bow — not to heaven, not to earth, not to one line of anything fate had written.

The second layer is havoc — the havoc of the great uproar. I had always taken it for wildness. When the breath washed over me I learned better: beneath the havoc, packed solid, was nothing but injustice refused. By what right is a yao born into the registry of the base? By what right does one stroke in a ledger fix the life and death of all things? When he wrecked the celestial court, that is what he was wrecking.

The third layer — the deepest — when it reached me, I wept aloud on the altar.

It is protection.

The pride, the havoc — all of it, by the end, had been smelted down into that one thing. Protecting one master across a hundred and eight thousand li. Protecting three brothers, and a horse, and every pitiable road-blocking yao they met. Of the ten thousand swings of the golden cudgel, nine thousand nine hundred were swung standing in front of somebody else.

Great Sage Equal of Heaven — the world remembers the arrogance of equal of heaven, and forgets that he spent the rest of his life living those words into something else: a heaven's worth of protecting.

Three days and nights, and the breath withdrew into the crown. Below the altar my companions waited. I held the crown and asked it one question — asking it, and asking its master, three hundred years gone:

"If I put you on, it is not to become him. I cannot be him — and the world does not need a second one. I put you on so that this title has someone to answer to it again. I will answer to your name in your place — until the day you come back to answer for it yourself. Is that acceptable?"

The phoenix wings on the crown trembled, once.

The water-curtain of the whole cave roared like thunder.

I put it on.

Three things after the crowning must go into this final page, for everyone who ever opens the Journey Scroll.

First: Grandpa Long-Arm came to see me. The old one looked me up and down a long time, laughed suddenly, and as suddenly wept. He said: cub — with the crown on, you don't look like him. And then: that's exactly right. He is he, and you are you. If he came home and found you living as his shadow, the first to refuse it would be him.

Second: the elder Bull Demon King set the seventh bowl before me, with full ceremony. He said: this bowl is Little Seven's — you may not drink from it. But from this day, you are entitled to fill it for him. I poured. The old Bull faced the full bowl, roared "Little Seven!" once, drained his own in a single draught, and cried like a child.

Third — only a few words, but they are what this page truly exists to record:

I still have not sat on the stone seat.

The seat in the deepest hall of Water Curtain Cave — all of Flower-Fruit Mountain says I have earned it now. I stood before it one whole night. In the end I only dusted, gently, the three hundred years from its surface, and polished, a little brighter, the ring where a staff once leaned.

The seat stays his.

The title I answer for him; the bowl I fill for him; the road I walk for him. The seat — that, I do not take.

Because in the last instant on the Heart-Listening Altar, as the breath withdrew, I heard one sentence. Not his voice — his breath, pressed into the deepest place of the title, and still hot after three hundred years:

"This old monkey has one step left unfinished."

One step. Which step? The breath ended without saying.

So — friend who has turned to this page: you have read all one hundred and fifty pages of the Journey Scroll now. And you will have seen it: in these hundred and fifty biographies, everyone is waiting; everyone is keeping something; everyone is owed an answer; and everyone faces west.

The bell is truing its voice. The drums are answering each other. The lotus is counting down its petals. The ninth tail is growing. And onto a three-hundred-year-empty register, one voice has answered "present."

And I — wearing his crown, standing in the company — will walk that final step: for him, and for the hundred and forty-nine companions of this scroll.

The black moon still hangs. The west still holds its silence.

But the title of the Great Sage Equal of Heaven has come back.

And the title's return means this —

heaven can be made equal again.
