Fireproof Rat

火浣鼠

The wrongful fire does not burn flesh. It burns memory. A child of the Keep stood in it for one incense-stick — and came out having forgotten his mother.

In their own words

I am an elder of the fire rat clan — two hundred years an old weaver at the fire-washed looms.

You have read the young one's account: fur clean or stained, fire honest or wrongful. Today I will tell what the child left untold: what the wrongful fire does when it burns a person.

Understand first that the wrongful fire is hard to flee, because it is not hot.

Honest fire scorches the skin at three feet, and the body flees on its own. Not this. It is lukewarm — pleasant, even, like winter sun on the back. The fire in the Keep's east lane began at midnight, its flames that glossy black-bright color, and the whole lane felt no heat — took it for lantern-glow — until the wrongness was noticed, by which time an eight-year-old boy had been standing at the fire's heart for a full incense-stick.

They pulled him out. Skin whole. Not one hair singed.

But he looked at the mother who flung her arms around him, and asked, politely: madam, who might you be?

The wrongful fire had burned away his eight years of memory — no, not all of it: a selection. His parents' faces, the way home, his own milk-name — burned clean. Yet he still knew his numbers, still knew the Keep's streets, still knew to bow to an officer. Do you see the malice of the selection? It kept what was useful. It burned what was his.

And where does burned memory go?

There is no ash. Honest fire leaves ash; the wrongful fire, burning memory, leaves nothing — no. Not quite nothing. After that fire was beaten out, I found, at the exact center of the burn, a single grain of something: rice-sized, black-glossed, heavy in the palm. Like one drop of set lacquer.

I carried it back to the grotto and made a trial: I set it on a half-woven bolt of fire-washed cloth.

And the cloth's fur bent toward it, strand by strand. The way wheat bends toward the sickle.

The ancestors' teaching says: fire-washed cloth knows the nature of fire, and fire's nature leans true. What the cloth-fur bends toward is a false fire's heart. That lacquer bead was the burned memory itself, congealed — eight years of mother, home, and milk-name pressed into one grain — dropped by something, not yet collected.

Not yet collected. The night I understood those four words, I did not sleep.

The wrongful fire does not waste memory. It harvests it. Like reaping wheat; like panning gold. Every span of memory it burns is condensed into such a bead, gathered up, and carried — somewhere.

What is harvested memory for? A weaver cannot answer. I know only two things.

First: the beads have grades. I have since recovered four more — each from ground the wrongful fire had crossed — and set side by side, their darkness differs. The deepest-black bead came from the burn where an old soldier lost his memory. What he forgot was a lost battle: every brother-in-arms dead in it, he the sole survivor. After he forgot, everyone said he was finally free; he smiled more. Only the bead stayed black enough to mirror a face.

Bitter memory sets the heaviest bead. What they are harvesting is bitterness.

Second: the Keep's wrongful fires choose the heavy-remembering. The widow of thirty years. The father who buried three sons. The gravedigger who dug for the whole Keep all his life. Each new fire strikes truer than the last. This is no random burning. It has a list.

A list. Again.

I have given all five beads to the medicine-basket boy. The Taibai-sending studied them a long time and said only: keep them safe. In the west, they will be needed.

The boy asked if I would come. These old bones can weave, but they cannot march. I passed my loom to the weaving-aunts, and the last fire-washed coat these hands will ever finish, I hung on the boy's shoulders.

At parting I gave him a single instruction:

child — on this road you will come to remember many bitter things. Remember them. Do not resent the weight.

When something is willing to go to such lengths to harvest memory, it can only mean —

memory is worth far more than we ever knew.
